Objectives

  • To provide students with practical exposure to child health care services for developmental and neurodevelopmental conditions.
  • To familiarize students with specialized therapeutic approaches such as Occupational Therapy, Aquatic Therapy, and Recreational Therapy.

Summary

The 4th-year Physiotherapy students of Jagannath University undertook an educational visit to Disha Foundation, Jaipur, with the aim of gaining hands-on exposure in the field of child health care. During the visit, the students observed therapeutic practices designed for children with a wide range of developmental and neurodevelopmental conditions, including developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and autism spectrum disorders.

They were introduced to various specialized services offered at the center. The Occupational Therapy (OT) Department focused on enhancing children’s independence by improving their daily living and functional skills. The students also witnessed Aquatic Therapy, where water-based exercises were used to facilitate relaxation, strengthen muscles, and improve mobility. Additionally, the Recreational Unit showcased how play and leisure activities can be integrated into therapy to foster social interaction, learning, and holistic well-being.

Beyond clinical skills, the visit highlighted the importance of adopting a multidisciplinary and child-centered approach, combining physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and special education. This experience not only broadened the students’ academic and clinical knowledge but also instilled in them the values of empathy, compassion, and creativity in delivering care. The visit thus served as a significant step in shaping them into well-rounded and sensitive health professionals.
